The Peter Tobin Oration honours the contribution of the late Peter Tobin OAM to the commemoration of the Eureka Stockade. This year’s speaker is acclaimed singer-songwriter and Eureka descendant, Shane Howard.

Shane Howard has established himself as one of Australia's most influential writers and singers. To mark the 167th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade, Shane, with accompanist Richard Tankard, will perform ‘Rebel Songs’, a unique evening of story and song that celebrates his ancestral connections and honours Eureka’s legacy.

Historian Paul Macgregor explores the way that Chinese miners on the Victorian goldfields dealt with racism and banded together to end discriminatory taxes and laws. He will give special attention to the Residence Tax Revolt of 1859 in Victoria, which he considers to be ‘the equal of the Eureka Rebellion, in terms of miners demanding rights and fair treatment’. This talk will be followed by a 45-minute discussion.

Author and journalist Jeff Sparrow leads a discussion with barrister and political commentator, Greg Barns SC and historian Dr Anne Beggs-Sunter about Eureka’s defining values, its enduring appeal and the flag’s symbolic malleability.

A panel discussion about the growing popularity of Dark Tourism and the challenges and opportunities it brings to heritage management and interpretation.

In this talk, Elizabeth Offer from the Jewish Museum of Australia goes beyond the narratives of men, gold, and rebellion on the goldfields, to find the hidden histories of Jewish women in Colonial Ballarat.
