WHAT'S ON

This display highlights one of the most important series of books from Ballarat Libraries’ Rare Book Collection: Jacques Labillardière’s 'Novae Hollandiae Plantarum Specimen’ (1804–1806).

This exhibition presents Ken Searle’s monumental painting, ‘Ballarat’ (1998) alongside an interactive digital representation of the work to allow for community-generated interpretation. This process seeks to draw on local knowledge, lived experience and personal memory.

This display presents rare and intriguing tourism publications and ephemera from the Ballarat Libraries’ Australiana Research Collection from the mid-1800s to more recent times.

‘Marks of Absence’ is an eight-panel series photographed by Des Crossley at Auschwitz using a Leica IIIC - a camera from the Holocaust era, connected to the story of Ernst Leitz and the ‘Leica Freedom Train’.

‘Within Sight’ is series emerging from a practice of slow, attentive walking. Paul Lambeth has created a record of visual phenomena, building his own archive of specific sites, usually close to home.

Craig Barrett’s paintings explore The Berry Consols – a series of abandoned gold mines, just north of Creswick and capture the subtle shifts in colour of the mullock heaps that dominate the area.

Gordon Monro is an artist who makes images from data. He has used data about the 1854 Eureka Stockade to generate imagery from the mathematical fragmentation of an eight-pointed Eureka star.

'People Watching' is an exhibition of large-scale photographs by Clement Hong Yui Chan that capture scenes of everyday life in his home city of Hong Kong.

In 2014 Ballarat community members created a replica Eureka Flag that was raised to mark the 160th anniversary of the 1854 Eureka Stockade. This community flag is featured in this exhibition alongside the tools and materials used to create it and photographs that tell its story.
