Talking History with Brigid Magner

We are excited to welcome Brigid Magner for our September Talking History. Brigid joins us on the eve of the 100-year anniversary of Henry Lawson’s death to discuss the cultural meanings of relics related to Henry Lawson – walking sticks, a tobacco packet, a suit, a hat, a pipe and posthumous casts of his face and hands. These artefacts – which are now largely housed within institutions – offer insight into his immense popularity and the efforts made by dedicated followers to preserve his material legacy since his death in 1922.

Brigid Magner is a Senior Lecturer in Literary Studies and founding member of the non/fictionLab at RMIT University. Her monograph ‘Locating Australian Literary Memory’ was published in 2019. She co-edits the Journal of Australian Studies and is a chief investigator on the ARC funded project ‘Reading in the Mallee: The Literary Past and Future of a Region’.
