Beneath the historic site of the Eureka Rebellion lies the Eureka Lead, an ancient gold-bearing river buried by time.
Join Lauren Powell for a guided tour tracing the path of the Eureka Lead. Along the way, discover how the Eureka Lead helped shape the course of Ballarat’s history, and learn about the social, economic, environmental, and political impacts of the Victorian gold rush.
Discover what an alluvial lead is and how it was accessed by gold miners. Learn how the unique characteristics of the Eureka Lead differed from other diggings, creating intensified competition for claims and contributing to the social tensions and grievances that led to the Eureka Rebellion.
Starting at the Eureka Centre entrance, Lauren will lead participants through the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park and surrounds. The 45-minute tour will leave precisely at the advertised start time. This is an outdoor event requiring gentle walking over some uneven ground. Sensible footwear and appropriate clothing are advised.
Lauren Powell is a Certified Tour Guide whose career in tourism and education spans almost 20 years. She has worked across Victoria’s leading visitor attractions, including Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Aquarium, Sovereign Hill, Ballarat Wildlife Park, and the Eureka Centre, where she shares Ballarat’s rich stories with visitors and learners of all ages.
